Erfahrungen: Matous Kucera came to the TUM to do his Master´s degree. He is a third-semester student of Informatics (M.Sc.). Originally he is from the Czech Republic.
I think that almost everyone at a certain point in his/her life wants to travel or discover different cultures and places beyond the borders of one’s home country. For me the right time came after finishing my bachelor studies at Czech Technical University in Prague. I wanted to continue my studies at the Master’s level so I decided to study abroad.
I selected the TUM because of many reasons. First of all, Germany and especially Munich is interesting to me because it has a lot in common with the Czech Republic. I see misunderstandings on both sides of the border. The easiest way to understand the other nation is to live there for a few years in order to get a different point of view on the same situation, which is also why I'm studying in Germany. The second reason for studying at the TUM is more pragmatic. This university is world-reknowned and offers many excellent programmes in many technical fields of study. Sometimes it happens that even at a renowned university some departments may not be at the same level as others but this is not the case in the TUM’s Department of Informatics. You can select from the large number of lectures taught in English from all of the fields in computer science. After one year of studies I've realised that all of the lectures which I was attending were at a high level and lived up to my expectations.
TUM also offers many exchange programs around Europe and around the world as well. It is really interesting that all students are allowed to participate in such programs, even foreign students. That's why I've decided on doing exchange studies in Finland during my studies in Germany. This gave me a new perspective on university education.
I cannot talk about any major differences or surprises which awaited me in Germany but I want to mention some things which I've realised after a few weeks in Munich. One nice surprise was that all of the people I've met were really kind, this helped me a lot in my first days at the university. Even professors always found time to discuss the students’ problems and tried to propose good solutions for them.
If you are sports-oriented you will find a huge number of sports possibilities in Munich offered by the TUM. The thing which really surprised me was that sports is really cheap for students.
So if you are planning your studies abroad, the TUM is the right choice. It will give you the opportunity to get a highly reputable education with a good scientific background and enjoy many experiences from the real world.
