Fakultät Informatik

Belinda Zahra is in her 4th semester (Bachelor) studying informatics at the TUM.

When I talk about my studies outside of the university I am often asked the question “As a woman, how did you get to study informatics?”.

By chance I discovered the program entitled “Girls in Research, The Fall University at the TUM” when I was in grade 13 and registered for the project called software development with “AntMe!”. Our assignment was to program ants searching for food. It was the first time that I ever programmed anything and in the relaxed atmosphere with the other girls it was very easy to learn something new. Because the program was so much fun and because I was curious to learn about everything that lies behind informatics, I registered to the informatics study program at the TUM. Now, after an Erasmus stay abroad in Sweden and prior to almost finishing my Bachelor’s degree, I have already applied to the TUM Department of Informatics to do my Master's degree.

During my studies, my enthusiasm for informatics has grown even more: I am able to independently develop things such as a game for the iPhone, websites or databases and can immediately see the results. I mostly appreciate the fact that one is actually never alone in informatics but rather, that we get to work a lot in teams, different from what many erroneously think.
