Fakultät Informatik

Jiayan Xu, is studying Information Systems at the TUM and is in the 4th semester of her Master course of study. She has a Bachelor's degree in Informatics, grew up in China and came to study in Germany

Towards the end of my school days in China it was clear to me that I wanted to study abroad. I compared several countries and finally decided on Germany. On the one hand, Germany is well known for its cutting edge technology and for its high quality education. On the other hand, I am particularly interested in the European culture and would like to experience it first-hand. I chose the TUM because of its good reputation. Furthermore, there exists many more career opportunities in Munich than in other cities.

As a Chinese student, at the beginning of my Bachelor studies it was difficult for me to imagine how a course of study would proceed in Germany. I got my first insights about studying there from the faculty websites. As I read about the curriculum and about the rules for the conduct of an examination, I immediately saw the possibility of shortening the duration of my studies. With help from the Student Advisory Service I created my personalised degree program and was able to shorten my study duration from 3 years to 2 years.

The Faculty of Informatics and the TUM offer special programs for foreign students such as German language courses in Garching or the  International Café. For women the TUM has a  MentorING-Program that I participated in for the period of one year. I could speak directly with mentors from recognized companies and institutions of science about my course of study and about my professional future.

When I decided to study abroad for a semester, I once again got informed by reading the TUM websites. Experience reports from other students and former exchange students also really helped me as they provided me with information regarding applications, visas, holiday semesters, and about the recognition of one’s academic performance. This made it possible for me to enjoy a problem-free and wonderful stay at my guest university in the USA.

Last but not least the TUM supports its students in many different aspects with regards to professional entry. Every year several job fairs take place directly on campus. For example during the IKOM, a job fair in Garching, I was given the opportunity to participate in a series of application trainings. I participated in a Mock-Assessment Center Test and was able to have my application portfolio verified by professionals.

All in all, the TUM utilizes many different measures in an effort to provide the best study environment for its students. I can only recommend that everyone gets to experience studying at the TUM.
