Eligibility
The program is open to students with a bachelor's or master's degree (see "Scientific qualification" below) in one of the following disciplines:
- engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, etc. Engineering)
- science (e.g. Physics, Biology, Chemistry, etc.)
- informatics/computer science
- applied mathematics
- an equivalent subject
If you have a degree in a computer-related or mathematics discipline, you will need to prove sufficient expertise in an engineering or science subject. This can be obtained by taking the relevant subject as a minor.
In addition, you will need to prove you have the following skills:
- a solid understanding of mathematics at an advanced level (see "Solid basic knowledge in Mathematics" below)
- knowledge of a modern programming language, e.g. C++, Java, Python, Fortran (see "Solid basic programming skills" below)
- very good English language skills (see here)

Scientific qualification
To be eligible for the CSE Master's Program, you need either
- a bachelor's degree (from an internationally recognized university) in engineering or science or a related field, or
- a diploma or master's degree (from an internationally recognized university) in one of the above-mentioned fields, or
- a bachelor's degree (from a university corresponding to a German Fachhochschule) in one of the above-mentioned fields, or
- a diploma or master's degree (from a university corresponding to a German Fachhochschule) in one of the above-mentioned fields, or
- a bachelor's or master's degree (from a university corresponding to a German Berufsakademie) in one of the above-mentioned fields.
Solid basic knowledge in Mathmatics
Solid basic knowledge in Mathmatics
A solid basic knowledge in mathematics is indispensible for taking part in the CSE Master's Program. You should be able to prove good knowledge in the topics taught in the mathematics courses of the German "Vordiplom" (similar to a bachelor's degree) in Engineering. More detailed information on the level of knowledge can be found in the FAQs.
Expect that you have to take part in a written examination if you can not provide the respective certificates!
Solid basic programming skills
Solid basic programming skills
Besides the solid basic knowledge in Mathematics, skills in a modern (object oriented) programming language (e.g. C++, Java, Python, Fortran, etc.) are needed. They can be proved by visited courses in previous studies or be mentioned in the CV. More detailed information on the level of skills can be found in the FAQs.
As with the need of solid basic knowledge in Mathematics, expect that you have to take part in a written examination if you can not provide the respective certificates!
Application documents
In addition to the standard application documents for master's programs, you will need to provide:
- Letters of recommendation (max. 2). Please use this form: ps/pdf
- Depending on your home country, additional documents can be required
- Applicants from India need GATE results
No application essay is required.
In addition, the following documents are not mandatory but help us the get a better impression of the applicant:
- A statement certified by your university to confirm your ranking on your former program, e.g. 3rd best student in a class of 50 graduates
- Description of the grading system of your former university
- Certified copy of university entrance qualification
- Copies of results from international graduate examination (e.g. the GRE or the GRE mathematics test)

Important dates and deadlines
This program begins in the winter semester only.
January 1 | Application opens. |
March 31 | Applications which reach us until this date will be processed sooner (right after this first deadline). Admissions will be send before the final deadline. This deadline is especially interesting for international applicants who need an admission as soon as possible to deal with organizational stuff like visa issues, etc.. |
May 31 | This is the final deadline. It is especially interesting for national applicants because for them it's more common to make the decision which Master's Program they will study during this time. |
March - August | Admissions decisions made. |
Mid-October | Start of program (lecture period). |
