The Best Job Opportunities for Computer Scientists
The Software Market is Growing
The Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media BITKOM, sees the software market on a growth course in 2012. This year revenue of software products will increase by 4.4 per cent to almost 17 billion euros in Germany – as per EITO the international market research institute. “For years the software market has achieved high, above-average growth rates”, says BITKOM board member Karl-Heinz Streibich in a press release dated March 2, 2012. According to EITO, global sales of software rose by 5.8% to 265 billion euros, even somewhat stronger than in Germany.
Good Prospects for 2012
The debt crisis doesn't have a negative impact on the ICT market in Germany – as per the data from BITKOM the Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media. In 2012 the IT market is expected to grow by 2.2 percent. Among the entire ICT market the IT sector lies ahead: Here experts expect a sales growth of 4.5 percent.
In particular, the volume of sales in software has been growing strongly for years. In 2011 as well as in 2012 this rise in sales has grown more than five percent to 17 billion euros.
In 2012 cloud computing is still the most important technology and market trend followed by mobile apps and security solutions.
The German IT Market is in the Process of Expanding
According to the February 2011 public prognosis from the Federal Association of Information Systems, Telecommunications and new Media (BITKOM), total revenues in Germany have increased by 2% and have reached 145,5 billion euros in the year 2011 in the field of information technology, telecommunications and consumer electronics.
BITKOM is expecting 10,000 new jobs to be generated in the year 2011 in the IT industry. In the previous year the industry experienced a plus of 8,000 new jobs.
IT fares better than other industries during economic crisis
“The economic crisis will leave its mark on the German high tech industry, but the IT sector isn’t quite as affected as other industries” said BITKOM president Prof. August-Wilhelm Scheer in a press release by BITKOM of July 2, 2009. The press release goes on to say that the IT industry’s development is much better than that of the overall economy.
The German high tech market will recover quickly after the current stunt in its growth. While economic researchers anticipate a 6% decrease of the German GDP, the inter-trade organization BITKOM estimates turnover with products and services from the information and communication technologies sector in Germany to drop 2.5% to 141 billion euro in 2009. The following year, the market is expected to rise 0.3% to 141.4 billion euro.
Shortage of IT Specialists
Graduates in Informatics have excellent prospects on the job market. In March 2008 the inter-trade organization BITKOM reported a need for 43,000 IT specialist jobs and spoke about a deficiency in skilled IT professionals. There are not enough informatics graduates. The industry has a much larger need for these specialists. This was the reason why every fourth company in the ITC industry (Information, Telecommunication, Communication) had to reject contracts in 2007 as it couldn’t find the skilled personnel needed. Software engineers and software architects are especially sought after
A job market study conducted by Dekra highlights that at present, software engineers and software architects have especially good prospects on the job market, followed by SAP specialists. Employers expect candidates to possess good communication skills and to be team players. Computerwoche July 2, 2009.
TUM-Alumni have good chances
The TU München Department of Informatics wanted to know precisely: In 2005 it interviewed its former students who graduated between 1985 and 2005 about their career entry.
TUM informatics graduates wrote an average of 4-5 job applications and got their first jobs after only 3-4 interviews. The graduates are aware that their successful integration into the job market can also be attributed to the TUM’s good reputation: More than half considered their studies at the TUM as being important to very important for their entry into the job market. Which explains why almost 90% of former students would attend the TU München again.
Bavarian Graduates Panel: TUM Informatics Alumni are satisfied
In November and December of 2005 the State Institution for University Research and University Planning "Bayerische Staatinstitut für Hochschulforschung und Hochschulplanung" surveyed graduates from Bavarian universities (examination year 2003/04). This Graduate Panel also shows us the good prospects offered to TUM informatics graduates:
- 100 % of the TUM informatics graduates surveyed have a job
- 20 % of these graduates get into Management positions and as the case may be into middle management positions
- TUM informatics alumni receive the highest starting salaries (3346 EUR per month)
- In a TUM comparative study, informatics graduates together with mechanical engineers are most satisfied with their job content. Above all with respect to job content, position and income
- 95 % of TUM informatics alumni would recommend this course of study
