University rankings

In international university rankings the Technische Universität München always scores as one of the best German universities. The TUM Informatics department is always highly ranked too: in German-wide rankings a high reputation is attested all the time.

The department of Informatics: By comparison

Human Resource Managers are convinced that students studying Information Systems at the TU München will be the best prepared for their careers. In Wirtschaftswoche’s 2012 university ranking, Information Systems at the TU München took first place.
Similarly, Informatics at the TU München is also in a top position: it is in third place. 500 human resource professionals within the economy were surveyed for this university comparison and rated universities and universities of applied sciences.

Computerwoche ranking 2011: The magazine Computerwoche introduces the 100 most significant personalities in the German IT industry in the release of a book. The three chair holders from the TUM- Informatics include: Manfred Broy, Claudia Eckert und Helmut Krcmar. Also listed are August-Wilhelm Scheer, TUM Distinguished Affiliated Professor, and Ernst Denert, honorary professor at the TUM.More information

The TUM-Information Systems is listed as the only German university among the Top 100 in the February 2011 public ranking  “AIS Senior Scholars’ Basket of Journals” from the Association of Information Systems (AIS) where it occupies the 55th place. Furthermore, the information systems professor, Martin Bichler, is listed as a top scientist in the  ranking of the 100 best scientists in the field.
For its ranking, the leading international specialist company evaluated and certified the frequency with which scientists had their work published in  eight important trade journals in the past 3 years (2008-2010). The TUM Informatics professor, Helmut Krcmar is a member of the  AIS Senior Scholars. The international specialist company gave the mandate to compile a list of the most prominent trade journals.

In the  research ranking of the CHE (Center for Higher Education Development) 2009, the TUM Informatics Department is in the lead. It is one of the strongest informatics departments in Germany in the field of research. The ranking consisted of comparing third-party funds, number of doctorates and reputation. In order to gauge reputation, professors were asked which university they saw as research leaders in their field.

In a university ranking of the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) in collaboration with the nationwide newspaper ZEIT (Studienführer 2009/2010) professors testified the department of Informatics at TUM high quality in teaching and study. Furthermore they certified the department to have a high reputation in research. Polled students were confident with the relation to research and to practise.

The Technische Universität München: By international comparison

According to the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine’s “World Reputation Ranking 2012”, the TU München (TUM) is the most renowned technical university in Germany. In a European comparison, it ranks fourth among the technical universities.

In the ranking, the magazine THE, categorizes the universities according to their international reputations in research and in teaching. For this purpose, more than 17,000 experienced academics worldwide were questioned about the most reputable universities within their disciplines. Under the German universities, the TUM comes in second after the LMU. Under the category European Technical University, only the Imperial College London, the ETH Zürich and the Delft University of Technology received a better ranking.

The ranking is based on a separate evaluation of the great “THE World University Ranking” published in October 2011.

In the worldwide university ranking from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University 2011 (Academic Ranking of World Universities ARWU) the TU München stands in 47th place which makes it the only German university that has managed to rank in the Top 50. In Germany it is followed by Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München(54) and the universities Heidelberg (62), Göttingen (86), Bonn (94) and Frankfurt (100). German technical universites follow in the spots above 200.
TUM-Informatics is also among the best: Like last year, it is the only German university in the academic field of computer science that was ranked among the Top 100.
The Shanghai-Ranking undertakes the rating based on the number of citations in scientific publications, in leading natural scientific magazines-Nature and Science as well as based on the highest honours such as Nobel prizes or field medals for example.

The Technische Universität München: By nationwide comparison

In the ranking of Alexander von Humboldt foundation in 2009 the Technische Universität München is ranked first in the category natural sciences. 
Scholarship holders in the category science of the years 2004 - 2008 decided preferental to come to Technische Universität München. The Alexander von Humboldt foundation finances stipendiary from abroad a stay in Germany. Due to the fact, that the scientist choose the university where they like to stay it shows the  popularity of the university.

Top Study Location Munich

In a worldwide comparison, Munich is among the top study locations – as shown in the  QS Best Student Cities Ranking 2012. Munich takes the 13th place which puts it at the front. Munich has one of the highest scores for the quality of living aspect, it takes the 3rd place.
 
The creators of the ranking fall back on data sources such as the QS World University Rankings and the Mercer Quality of Living Survey 2011 among others.
