In the subject ranking for Computer Science in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2012, (“Shanghai Ranking”), TUM Informatics once again finds itself listed as the best German university. TUM Informatics has occupied this top position for many years in a row. TUM was also rated as the top university in Germany in the institutional rankings.
In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2012, Engineering & Technology - Computer Science, TUM Informatics, in 48th place, emerged as the best German university in the field Informatics. No other German informatics department made it into the top 50.
In February 2011, the Association of Information Systems (AIS) evaluated the frequency with which international scientists had their work published in eight important trade journals during the previous three years. The TUM Department of Informatics was the only German institution among the top 100, occupying 55th place. Furthermore, information systems professor Martin Bichler was listed as one of the world’s 100 best scientists in the field.

TUM has once again been rated as the best German university in the worldwide QS World University Ranking 2012. The ranking placed TUM in position 53 internationally, and number one among all comprehensive and technical universities in Germany. The QS ranking is based on the university’s reputation among scholars and companies, citations per researcher, student-to-teacher ratio, and the proportion of international employees and students.
TUM was also again ranked as the best German university in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities 2012 (“Shanghai Ranking”). It came in at 53rd place worldwide and held its position above all other universities in Germany. The ranking by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University evaluates the research achievements of universities based above all on publications in important journals and citation ratings, as well as the number of scientists and alumni with Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
According to the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine World Reputation Ranking 2012, TUM is the most renowned technical university in Germany and ranks fourth among all European technical universities. Within Europe it is led only by Imperial College London, ETH Zürich, and Delft University of Technology. This ranking categorizes universities according to their international reputations in research and in teaching. For this purpose, more than 17,000 experienced academics worldwide were surveyed about the most renowned universities within their disciplines.

In the 2012 ranking by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) in collaboration with the newspaper Die Zeit, TUM Informatics was recognized for its excellent research reputation.
Human resource managers in Germany believe TUM Informatics students are the most desirable job candidates. In the 2012 university ranking by the magazine Wirtschaftswoche, the Information Systems program took first place and the Informatics program came in third place for their ability to prepare students for successful careers.
The magazine Computerwoche identified the 100 most important figures in the German IT industry. The list features three TUM Informatics chair-holders: Professors Manfred Broy, Claudia Eckert and Helmut Krcmar. Also included TUM distinguished affiliated professor August-Wilhelm Scheer, and honorary professor Ernst Denert.
