Metrics for Application Landscapes: Status Quo, Developtment, and a Case Study

Abstract:

Metrics can be used for measuring aspects of an application landscape, and constitute an instrument in managing these landscapes. They can make application landscape management more systematic, and render goasl and their achievement more accessible to business. The work presents an empirical analysis of the environment, in which metrics for application landscapes are used. It surveys acceptance, potential and usage scenarios of appplication landscape metrics. The analysis result form the basis of guidelines for application landscap metrics. As an example, the work introduces two metrics-based methodologies concernde with failure propagation in an application landscape. A cases study applies thes methodologies at a large bank. The case study compares proposals for limiting failure propagation. It provided the stakholders with improved insights into the effects of the proposals, demonstrating the benefit of application landscape metrics.
