MT/BT/GR/AP DestiRec: A Travel Recommender Systems for Destination Recommendation

Recommender systems recommend movies, restaurants or other items to an active user based on information about users and items.  The domain of travel and tourism is more complex than others, because the products to be recommended have many facets and need to be combined for a composite or packaged trip. In previous work, we have developed a Web-based solution for destination recommendation (http://regionrec.traveller-world.com) [1]. The scenario is an independent traveler who wants to specify her travel requirements and preferences (time of year, duration of trip, budget, favored activities etc.), and get a list of recommended options, i.e. travel regions that suits her query best.

We offer several options for Master's or Bachelor's Thesis, Guided Research in the Informatics (or related) Master’s program (IN2169) or Application Project in the Master Data Engineering and Analytics program (IN2328) in this research area. The actual topic can be discussed and will be specific in one of the following areas:
- Developing an extensible software platform with appropriate user interface for the project
- Improving the data model of destinations and travelers, possibly modeling them as a Knowledge Graph
- Further investigation of the recommendation algorithm with a focus on combining items to a composite trip

Prerequisites are high motivation and good programming skills. The actual focus will be discussed and tailored towards the type of the project, e.g. thesis or guided research. It is also possible to work on a topic in a small team.
