Application - M.Sc. Computational Science and Engineering
Eligibility
The program is open to students with a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the following disciplines:
- engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, etc. Engineering)
- science (e.g. Physics, Biology, Chemistry, etc.)
- informatics/computer science (be aware that CSE is not Computer Science, M.Sc. Informatics)
- applied mathematics
- an equivalent subject
If you have a degree in a computer-related or mathematics discipline, you will need to prove sufficient expertise in an engineering or science subject. This can be obtained by taking the relevant subject as a minor.
In addition, you will need to prove you have the following skills:
- a solid understanding of mathematics at an advanced level (see "Solid basic knowledge in Mathematics" below)
- knowledge of a modern programming language, e.g. C++, Java, Python, Fortran (see "Solid basic programming skills" below)
- very good English language skills (see here)
Please see the FAQ for answers to frequently asked questions on eligibility.
Solid basic knowledge in mathematics
A solid basic knowledge in mathematics is indispensible for taking part in the CSE Master's Program. You should be able to prove good knowledge in the topics taught in the mathematics courses of a German Bachelor in Engineering, i.e., linear algebra and calculus (integral, vector, etc.), and, in the best case, also numerics and stochastics.
Solid basic programming skills
Besides the solid basic knowledge in Mathematics, skills in a modern (object oriented) programming language (e.g. C++, Java, Python, Fortran, etc.) are needed. They can be proved by courses visited in previous studies, additional certificates, or by working experience mentioned in the CV.
Application documents
First of all, you need the standard application documents for master's programs (see "Eligibility" and "Application and Required Documents"). In addition to these documents you have to provide the following documents if you apply for CSE:
- Two letters of recommendation. Please use this form.
- Depending on your home country, additional documents can be required
- Analysis of Curriculum. Please use this form.
Supplementary, the following documents are not mandatory but help us to get a better impression of the applicant:
- A statement certified by your university to confirm your ranking on your former program, e.g. 3rd best student in a class of 50 graduates
- Description of the grading system of your former university
- Certified copy of university entrance qualification
In contrast to the standard application documents for master's programs in the Informatics department, an essay is not mandatory to apply for CSE, but you have to provide a letter of motivation.
A checklist with all documents which are required to apply for CSE can be found here. Please use it and do not forget any mandatory documents, because this slows down the processing of your application.
We prepared a separate application guide in one file, which can be downloaded here. Please read it carefully.
Proof of German language proficiency
For international applicants:
This Master's program can be completed in English and knowledge of the German language is not relevant for your admission. Nonetheless, as you are studying in Germany, the Bavarian State Government insists that you acquire at least a basic level of German language knowledge during your course of study.
In case you already have knowledge of the German language (level A1 or higher), please submit the proof as part of the application. The certificate must indicate the highest level of your acquired German language skills and must be submitted in original or as a certified copy.
Students who did not provide proof of proficiency in German, are admitted on condition to complete one module providing integrative knowledge of the German language within the first two semesters of their studies. All modules counting for your study program will be recognized for this. We strongly recommend to also participate in a German language course, e.g. at the TUM Language Center.
Important dates and deadlines
This program begins in winter semester only. CSE is a full time study program. You cannot study CSE in part-time.
