Eligibility

Students who have completed, or are about to complete, a Bachelor's degree in Informatics/Computer Science are eligible to apply. 
We will check your transcript for equivalence with the curriculum of the BSc. Informatics of TUM. If your Bachelor's program did not cover equivalent subjects, you cannot be admitted to the Master's program. The academic qualification is the most important criteria for us. Missing academic qualification cannot be compensated by working experience.

Equivalent academic qualification in Mathematics, Informatics and Theory is very important to us. Therefore, if 14 credits or more are missing when comparing your modules to the following group of modules of the BSc. Informatics, your Bachelor's degree is not equivalent and the application will be rejected without further assessment:

  • IN0007 Fundamentals of Algorithms and Data Structures
  • IN0011 Introduction to Theory of Computation
  • IN0015 Discrete Structures
  • MA0901 Linear Algebra for Informatics
  • MA0902 Analysis for Informatics
  • IN0018 Discrete Probability Theory

A BSc. in Mathematics does no longer qualify for the MSc. Data Engineering and Analytics.

Topics for the scientific essay

The scientific essay/paper, submitted along with the online application, should be approximately 1,000 words in length. Your scientific paper/essay should introduce the topic, discuss it, and lead to a logical conclusion. Please use relevant data and scientific literature to support your argumentation. Ideas that are not your own must be identified as such! The term "essay" can be misleading - we require a scientific paper with proper citation! Your sources of information must be listed at the end. The essay must be your own work and you should write it without any assistance.  

Applicants must choose one of the following topics:

  • Topic 1: 
    Are Data Structures and Algorithms obsolete today in the age of Machine Learning?
  • Topic 2: 
    Scale up or scale out: Is there one solution that fits all problem sizes?
  • Topic 3: 
    Explaining what learned models predict: In which cases can we trust machine learning models and when is caution required?

Important Dates and Deadlines

  • Online application and submission of required documents:
    For the winter semester: 
    January 1 – March 31: recommended application deadline for applicants who need a visa 
    January 1 – May 31: compulsory application deadline

    For the summer semester: 
    September 1 – October 31: recommended application for applicants who need a visa 
    November 30: compulsory application deadline 
  • No submission of missing application documents after the official application deadline!
     
  • Admissions decisions made, interview invitations sent via e-mail:    
    For the winter semester: March – September
    For the summer semester: December – March
  • Telephone interviews:
    For international applicants living abroad, an individual date will be arranged when your documents have been checked.
  • Start of program (lecture period):
    Winter semester: 18 October 2021
    Summer semester: 12 April 2021
