In worldwide comparisons, Munich has been consistently ranked as one of the best places in the world to study and live (see QS Best Student Cities). Students, young professionals, and renowned scholars from all over the world gather in Munich, where they enjoy the international flair and extraordinary quality of life. With a population of just under 1.4 million, Munich is Germany’s third-largest city – but also one of the cleanest and safest metropolitan areas in the country.
Munich offers something for everyone. The magnificent English Garden lies at the center of the city and is among one of the largest city-center public parks in the world. Nature lovers can enjoy the city’s many parks or go mountain biking and climbing, skiing and snowboarding in the nearby Alps. The museums in Munich are renowned worldwide and for cultural entertainment you can choose from among more than 100 theaters and concert halls.
Munich and its surroundings represent an international hotspot for information and communication technology. No other place in Germany has more companies in the field of IT, software, and communications. Big names such as Apple, Adobe, Google, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems are located here. As a student here, you will be able to benefit from this throughout your studies. You can work together with companies on research and development projects, or complete a hands-on internship at an IT firm.
Munich is the capital of the state of Bavaria, which is also a leading high-tech location. In 2016, almost 33 percent of patent applications in Germany came from Bavaria — more than any other state. The city serves as an excellent launchpad for any computer-related career.
The Department of Informatics is located on TUM’s Garching Campus, one of the largest research centers in Germany. The campus lies north of Munich and is directly connected to the city center by its own subway station (travel time 25 min.).
Other TUM departments such as Mathematics, Engineering, and Natural Sciences are our neighbors on the Garching Campus. We are also within walking distance of:
- Research facilities of Ludwig Maximilians Universität
- The leading-edge Max Planck Society
- European Southern Observatory
- gate Garching Technology and Entrepreneur Center
- GE Global Research – European headquarters
Students and researchers have many opportunities to work and learn in interdisciplinary teams due to the close proximity of these institutes and research facilities.
