Providentia++

Motivation

With the project “Providentia++”, the Technical University of Munich has set the objective for the further development of autonomous driving in mixed traffic conditions. Autonomous driving can optimize the flow of traffic and reduce the number of accidents. In addition, the data collected by the technology of autonomous driving, offer a lot of opportunities for commercial and scientific use.

Complex traffic scenarios, such as intersections, roundabouts or exits on motorways, with a variation of traffic density are the biggest challenges for autonomous driving. The restricted field of vision of the vehicle is not sufficient to valuate these situations. Therefore, within the context of „Providentia++“, it is also necessary to equip the surrounding infrastructure, which has to be considered in the evaluation process. This ensures long-term acceptance of highly automated driving.

 

Objective

The infrastructure, which resulted from the previous project „Providentia”, enables the mapping of the traffic on the motorway A9. As part of „Providentia++“, the infrastructure will be extended to urban areas in Garching-Hochbrück. The purpose of the extension is testing and researching the interaction between autonomous vehicles and the infrastructure in complex traffic in a city.

To increase the reliability of the complete system, the data streams from autonomous vehicles and the infrastructure has to be merged. The generated informations are fed to the algorithms for valuation the traffic situations. These algorithms have to be optimized within the context of this project too. This enables robust and reliable operation even in changing of environmental conditions (e. g. time of day, weather or technical faults).

Another key point in „Providentia++“ is the development of a platform to provide data about the current traffic situation. This ensures that commercial and scientific third-party software get a uniform interface to the data. These value-added services are intended to increase the attractiveness of the system in the long term.

 

Project organization

The project is executed by a consortium of research institutes and leading industrial partners under the coordination of the Technical University of Munich. The technical backgrounds of the industrial partners are robotics, artificial intelligence, software technology, automotive, communication technology and semiconductor technology. This guarantee the best output in “Proventia++”.
