Job Posting: System Administrator (Student / up to 20h)

The Chair for Application and Middleware Systems at TUM is looking for a Student System Administrator to support the current staff. We have a highly diverse research spectrum covering Blockchain, Graph Processing, Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning, and Signal Processing. This is possible due to our cluster and our infrastructure, which provides us with the possibility to spawn virtual machines on-demand.

We currently maintain over 40 nodes which are managed with MAAS and Puppet. We run Openstack as our cloud operating system, coupled with MUNIN for monitoring. Additionally, we host a Domain-Level Name server, a DHCP server, our own GitLab, and a variety of other services. Some of them are tightly coupled with the RBG (our in-house IT provider) infrastructure, like the CEPH storage cluster or their highly fault-safe virtual machines. Recent additions were our Edge-Computing cluster consisting of Raspberry Pi nodes and a few GPU nodes.

Your profile:

  • Studying Computer Science or similar

  • Have a healthy interest in reading documentation carefully and work independently

  • No in-depth knowledge of the above services is necessary

  • Feel comfortable on the command line

  • Have a general understanding of how computers work and attended a computer architecture lecture

  • Preferably some Linux administration experience

  • Located in Munich, due to the need for occasional hardware access

Your tasks:

  • Support the existing staff with maintaining and expanding the documentation

  • Help with maintanence and automation of the services described above

  • General Linux administration, e.g., adding users or modifying access rights

We provide:

  • Competitive student salary (TV-L based on your level of education)

  • Flexible working times, working remotely is encouraged

  • Hands-on experience in managing a non-trivial hardware setup

  • Supervision on how to manage running systems and general linux administration

  • The possibility to run your own experiments on our hardware if it is not used

  • The chance to apply the knowledge learned in lectures

  • An office and a coffee machine :)
