What it's all about.

TUM’s Department of Informatics is research-oriented, with a large number of research projects in a wide range of areas covering both the fundamental issues of informatics and its practical applications. This stronghold is also reflected by a large number of successful Ph.D. projects (“Promotion”) every year.

A recent university ranking with a focus on research revealed that in comparison with other German universities, the TUM’s Informatics Department is leading in terms of the annual numbers of completed Ph.D. projects. This is one of the reasons why our department is at the top level in this ranking. (Research Ranking of the CHE - Center for Higher Education Development)

A successful Ph.D. project is the result of research pursued over the course of several years under the guidance of one of the department’s professors. This work is summarized in a Ph.D. thesis or dissertation. For the proven ability to perform competitive scientific research, the TUM's Department of Informatics awards a doctoral degree – typically a “Dr.rer.nat.”, in some cases also a “Dr.-Ing.”. A doctoral degree from the TUM’s Department of Informatics is your entrance ticket to an academic career or to leadership in industry.
